Welcome to British War Graves in Lithuania.
- ~ For The Fallen
- ~ by Robert Laurence Binyon (1914) ~
- With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
- England mourns for her dead across the sea.
- Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
- Fallen in the cause of the free.
- Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal
- Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres.
- There is music in the midst of desolation
- And a glory that shines upon our tears.
- They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
- Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
- They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
- They fell with their faces to the foe.
- They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
- Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
- At the going down of the sun and in the morning
- We will remember them.
- They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
- They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
- They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
- They sleep beyond England's foam.
- But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
- Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
- To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
- As the stars are known to the Night;
- As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
- Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain,
- As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
- To the end, to the end, they remain.

Two members of the British Armed forces are remembered in Lithuania, both of which have memorial stones located at Old Vitės Cemetery in Klaipeda. These are Private A. Bunting from the 22nd Service Batallion of the Manchester Regiment and Private J. W. Crockson of the Somerset Light Infantry, who both lost their lives during the Great War of 1914 to 1918.
Please browse the site. We welcome any feedback and if you can provide any further information on the lives of the two afore mentioned servicemen, or know of any errors or omissions, we would love to hear from you.
Private A. Bunting : 1885 to 1919
22nd (Service) Battalion Manchester Regiment
Arthur Bunting was born in 1885 to Charles and Emma Bunting and was one of 13 siblings, three of which are recorded as having sadly died by the time of 1911 census.
His father was recorded as working as a Beer Storer and then a Coachman, so Arthur's only recorded career as a Coach Painter's Labourer, prior to enlistment into the Manchester Regiment, was probably no coincidence.
Private J. W. Crockson : 1884 to 1917
1st Somerset Light Infantry
James William Crockson was born in Bermondsey, London on 4th June 1884.
In 1913 James was married to Ellen M O'Connor in the district of St. Olave, Southwark, London, England.
James was part of the British Expeditionary Force, consisting of Battalions from many regiments and was captured at the Battle of Le Cateau a month after the outbreak of The Great War.
